Scientific Oration Prof. Hasanuddin Z. Abidin

Located in Building Scientific Meeting Hall ITB Jl. Soerapatti Bandung on Saturday, February 9, 2007, Professor Hasanuddin Z. Abidin of FITB Geodesy Research Group, delivered scientific oration with the title “The Role of Satellite Geodesy In Understanding the Dynamics of Earth in Indonesia Region” before the Assembly Member Professor of ITB and ITB teaching staff.

Synopsis Creative Scientific Speech is as follows:

According to IAG (International Association of Geodesy) Geodesy is the discipline that studies the measurement and perepresentasian of the Earth and other celestial objects, including the field of gravity respectively, in three-dimensional space that changes with time. While geodetic satellites are sub-disciplines of Geodesy who uses the help of satellites (natural or manmade) to complete tasks and problems of geodesy, which is fundamentally related to the positioning, determining the field of gravity, as well as the determination of the temporal variation of the position and field of gravity.

At this time the application systems of geodetic satellites, such as SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging), LLR (Lunar Laser Ranging), VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), satellite altimetry, Satellite Navigation (eg GPS and Glonass) is very broad and diverse, ranging from the field of geodesy, surveying and mapping, navigation, marine, terrestrial and aerospace.

In this oration, the authors generally will first explain the role that can be given satellite geodesy methods in understanding the dynamics of the Earth in the Indonesian territory, geographically, geological and geophysics possessed relatively high dynamics. Further discussion will be concentrated on the use of methods of Satellite Navigation, in this case the GPS (Global Positioning System), which has been done to better understand the dynamics of Earth in Indonesia.

The results of research related to the study of the deformation of the volcano, soil degradation (land subsidence), ground movement (landslides), as well as tectonic activity in several locations in Indonesia will be given and explained.

Ditutp oration with some suggestions and recommendations for optimizing satellite geodesy role in the development process in Indonesia in general and improve the understanding of the dynamics of the Earth region of Indonesia in particular.
