Indonesian First medal in 2012 International Geography Olympiad Achieved FITB ITB Students

Bandung, fitb.itb.ac.id – Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Wananda Rahmat Star, won the silver medal in the event the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) 9th place on 21 to 27 August 2012 in Koln, Germany. It became a proud achievement for the new Indonesia participated biennial Olympics for the first time.

“In the acquisition, the silver medal was achieved by Indonesia positioning Indonesia aligned with New Zealand, the Netherlands, England, Russia, China, and Taiwan, each of which also received a silver medal,” said the supervisor of the Indonesian team to IGEO 9th, Samsul Bachri, in a press conference at the ITB Rector, Bandung, Monday (10/09/2012).

Samsul said the organizers had even surprised to see Indonesia as a team for the first time following an international competition for students aged 16-19 years it was able to align itself with countries that have long followed the competition. In fact, Indonesia is also able to snatch the title of “The Best Presentation” for the case study “Karst Hydrology in Relation with Drought Problem in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta”.

The Indonesian team consisted of four students who netted from special selection. Because there was no Olympic-geography at the national level. Supervising team gathered champions Olympics geosciences and geography were held by a number of universities and schools pioneering international standards and selecting them to produce the name of Star Grace Wananda, Adnan Teak Satria of SMAT Activities of the archipelago, Mohammad Anja Istala of the study program Geology, University of Gadjah Mada, and Mohammad Ridwan of High School Boarding School Sragen.

Before leaving for Germany, the participants receive coaching for a month to hone cognitive and mental abilities under the guidance of Samson. The departure of the team, he added, conducted independently by collecting funds from sponsors.

He hoped the Olympic team delivery geography of Indonesia can be done on a regular basis with the budget coming from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The next Olympic Games will be held in Kyoto, Japan, July 30-August 5, 2013.
