History

Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology was originally part of Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology. The expansion idea of Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology arises due to the wide spectrum of geography and dichotomy of science and engineering. This situation resulted in differences between fields of science related to the management of resources, especially in supporting implementation of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi in Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology. Earth sciences such as geology, geophysics, meteorology and oceanography are studying the earth to understand the phenomena that are certainly useful for various matters concerning human life including illustrating the resources contained in the earth. These areas have great scientific content but could not be separated from its applied content.

Meanwhile, the field that examines the resources contained in the earth, in addition to requiring basic knowledge of earth science, also needs to be complemented by various ways and methods applied to quantify the potential and reserves, exploit, process and management of earth resources to be able to utilize optimally. Mining and petroleum fields have greater fields of applied engineering.

Based on the above considerations, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology expanded into two faculties Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology and Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering. The purpose of the formation of both scientific units is to develop a more focused scientific institution to achieve the vision of becoming an international institution. A leaner organization certainly has better management control, so it is expected to be more easy and swift in choosing steps to achieve that vision. With more focus on each scientific units, it is expected that the role of scientific units, including research group and its study programs, is increasing, both internally and externally to address the challenges faced by the nation and state of Republic Indonesia.

The faculty expansion is strengthened by:

  • Letter of Rector of Institute Technology Bandung number: 040 / K01 / SK / OT / 2007 regarding the changes of Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology to Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering and Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology
  • Letter of Rector of Institute Technology Bandung number: 257 / SK / K01 / OT / 2007 regarding the moving on Geodetic and Geomatics Study Program, Geodesy Research Group, Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Science Research Group, Hydrographic Science and Engineering Research Group, Surveying and Cadastre Research Group from Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environment to Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology, Institute Technology Bandung.

Vision

Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology becomes one of the educational institutions, research centers and innovations of earth science-technology that is competitive, qualified, initiative and contribute to the needs of nation and state.

Mission

  • Guiding, examining, developing and implementing appropriate earth-science technologies to meet the needs of Indonesia.
  • To establish the international cooperation network with universities, research centers and other strategic institutions in Indonesia and abroad to develop cooperation in sustainable earth sciences and technology

Perspectives of Earth Science and Technology according to FEST

Earth science is often referred to as earth science or geoscience with other basic science, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology should be part of a national strategy to improve the “literacy” (science literacy) (AGU, 2004).

In harmony with that, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Techmology has complete human resources to examine the earth’s phenomena consisting of lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The division of the good role makes FEST need to promote the whole earth science. By the joining of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering program that brings the character of positioning and measurement of earth landscape technology will add FEST’s strength as the only faculty studying the geology of science and technology.
