Bandung, Indonesia – College Students of Tahap Persiapan Bersama (TPB) Fakultas Ilmu dan Teknologi Kebumian (FITB) The Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) recently organized a remarkable Geography and Geoscience competition entitled Olimpade Geografi dan Geosains (OGG). This event showcased the talent, knowledge, and enthusiasm of students in diverse contests such as video making, poster design, eco-business cases, geoscience, geography, and English speech. The geoscience and geography competitions emerged as the most popular and eagerly anticipated events of the competition.
The geoscience and geography competition featured three different tests that challenged participants’ skills and understanding. The Written Response Test (WRT) and Laboratory Test evaluated students’ theoretical knowledge and practical application. The Multimedia Test assessed their ability to utilize technology and creativity in presenting geographic and geoscientific concepts. The Field Work Test provided an opportunity for students to apply their skills on the ground, exploring real-world scenarios and collecting data.
Before the competition officially commenced, the OGG also organized a free webinar entitled “BRIGS: Building Resilience in the Face of Geohazards – Spirit of Sustainability.” The webinar aimed to enhance the public’s understanding of geohazards and foster a spirit of sustainability in addressing environmental challenges. Renowned experts and researchers shared valuable insights and practical lessons about geohazard, empowering participants with knowledge and inspiration.
The opening ceremony of the competition took place on May 25th, 2023 at Aula Barat, one of the ITB’s prestigious buildings. The ceremony commenced with the symbolic act of beating a gong, performed by Prof. Irwan Meilano, M.Sc., (Dean) and Prof. Agus Moch. Ramdhan, Ph.D. , (Academic Vice of Dean FITB), representing the spirit of resilience and determination. The event also attended by associates professor of Geothermal and Geomedik in Badan Riset Inovasi Nasional (Riostantieka Mayandari Shoedarto, Ph.D.), head of bachelor programs in FITB (Dr. Eng. Asep Saepuloh, S.T., M.Eng., Dr.Ir. Wedyanto, M.Sc., Dr. Muhammad Rais Abdillah, S.Si., M.Sc., & Dr. Ayi Tarya, S.Si., M.Si.), educators, and representatives from various schools. They create an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming contests.
Geography Olympiad is an academic competition that involves geographical issues from all elements in this world, both scientific and social aspects. On the other side, the Geoscience Olympiad raises geoscience issues, such as phenomena related to astronomy, oceanography, geology, and meteorology. The semifinal competition was held online. The final session was held in Bandung. This competition is a preparatory event for the National Science Olympiad (OSN) Geography and Earth Geosciences in the related year. Meanwhile, the central selection stage was carried out centrally in the city of Bandung, consisting of 3 types of tests to be tested, namely a theoretical test which was further divided into a Written Response Test (WRT) and a Laboratory Test (Demonstrator Test); Multimedia Test/MMT; and field tests (Field Work Test).
Throughout the competition, participants demonstrated exceptional creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Their projects, presentations, and performances showcased their deep understanding of geographical and geoscientific concepts, as well as their ability to address real-world challenges.
The awarding night, held on May 28th 2023 at Aula Barat, marked the culmination of the competition. It was a moment of celebration and recognition for the outstanding achievements of the participants. Winners were announced, and accolades were presented to those who excelled in their respective contests. The awarding night also provided an opportunity for participants, educators, and organizers to reflect on the competition’s success and to cherish the memories created throughout the event.
The Geography and Geoscience competition organized by ITB underscored the importance of nurturing young talent in these fields. It provided a platform for students to showcase their skills, exchange knowledge, and inspire one another. The competition aimed to instill a passion for geography, geoscience, and sustainability among the participants, empowering them to become future leaders and problem solvers in these critical areas.
