Geological Research Group is a group of scholarship that based on basic principles of fundamental geology that is petrology, stratigraphy and structural geology. In the development of Geological Sciences will be associated with the more specific areas of mineralogy, geochemistry, volcanology, sedimentology, paleontologi-mikropaleontologi, geophysics, seismology, tectonics and geomechanics.
This Research group, in addition to emphasizing research and development of science in fundamental fundamental areas, also plays an active role in supporting the development of theories and concepts related to the utilization of geological resources such as minerals (strategic and industrial) and energy (oil and gas, coal) and contributes in issues related to the uniqueness of Indonesian geology such as volcanoes and seismicity.

Paleontology and Quarternary Geology activities mainly related to macropaleontology or invertebrate macrofossil and vertebrates (vertebrates) as well as human fossils. Because in general vertebrate animals are commonly found in Quaternary sediments (Plestocene), in this case, it is necessary the support of important science in the interpretation of the ancient climate and the living environment of the fossils of vertebrates and early humans. Paleontology is the study of the remains of ancient life and everything associated with it. For the development of the science of vertebrate and human peleontology needs to be supported by the development of Quaternary Geology, including Paleoanthropology and Geoarkeology.

In macropaleontology itself not only develops vertebrate paleontology but also develops other macrophoss such as molluscs, corals, etc. Macropaleontological development such as molluscs and corals is intended to assist in the development of geology in the field of stratigraphy and sedimentology for the determination of age and also paleoenvironment and paleogeography.
